As always, my reviews have spoilers because I’m too lazy to do this twice. I’m not a cool movie critic or any shit like that. My bread and butter is motivation, but I’m a geek, and I love to talk, thus I drop reviews on stuff I really love. Or in unfortunate cases, stuff I didn’t like that much.
I’m looking at you, Batman V. Superman.
Everyone was hoping after the clusterfuck that was Dawn Of Justice, the big-wigs over at DC could right the proverbial ship of their movie universe with Suicide Squad. Did they?
Well, that depends on what your definition of “righting the ship” is.
I liked this movie a lot, but then again, I didn’t walk in the theatre with the expectation of seeing some masterpiece. In my mind, I was preparing for a fun action movie with a lot of awesome characters I had yet to see on screen. On that front, it delivered. It delivered in fucking SPADES.
DC is great at casting people to play their characters. Well, except for Jesse Eisenberg. Great actor, but not Lex Luthor. Aside from him, they’ve done a stellar job with casting and choosing great actors to carry these movies. Will Smith as Deadshot was phenomenal. I know he’s one of the best actors in the business, which kinda worried me. I thought he was gonna be larger-than-life and outshine everyone. Nope, not the case at all. He was awesome without being overbearing.
Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, as expected, fucking KILLS it. She owns every scene she’s in. Jared Leto is used just the right amount of times as the new cinematic Joker as well. Viola Davis was so awesome as Amanda Waller, but once again, this was expected.
What I didn’t expect, was a truly memorable performance by Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang! Jai Courtney has kinda sucked for years as an actor, but man oh man, was he a fucking joy to watch in this flick! And surprise surprise, he has a scene with The Flash!!!
All the other characters were great, and it was so amazing to see all these comic book legends come to life on screen. This movie, all in all, was a fun, 80’s style action movie. No big plot. No big convoluted mess of explanations. Just a bunch of bad guys getting thrown into a situation where they have to save the world. I mean seriously, THAT’S IT. That’s the premise. So if you’re expecting some hard-hitting story telling, you’re better off watching The Dark Knight again. This is not that movie, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t want it to be either.
I had a great time with this one, and Lord knows I’ve been hard on movies in the past. But, I also know which movies are meant to be what they are, and I adjust my expectations to follow suit. I expected fun, and guess what? I had a lot of fun. The action was great. The banter was great. The way Batman was used was really cool. The only 2 drawbacks of this movie are mediocre dialogue at some points, and weak “villains” that they go up against. Other than that, this is definitely a great example of what DC can do when they understand the tone they’re going for and don’t try to write 12 movies in 1.
Once again, I’m looking at you Batman V. Superman.
Oh! Make sure you stay for the mid-credits scene! Spoiler- Bruce Wayne has a meeting with Amanda Waller where she gives him files on meta-humans, which sets up how he even knows where people like Aquaman or The Flash even can be found. If you’re a fan of the Justice League animated series, you will LOVE this scene. And even if you’re not, it’s still cool as hell regardless.
That’s the written version. If you’re up for it, check out my video review below! Peace!
